STL file in jewelry 3D printing and casting

An STL file is a 3D model saved as a mesh of flat triangles. It describes the surface of a piece and nothing else: no units, separate parts or materials. That makes it the usual file to send to a 3D printer and a poor one for a product image. In jewellery, it is printed in castable resin or wax as the pattern for lost-wax casting.

What is inside an STL

Each triangle is stored as three corner points and the direction its face points. The name comes from stereolithography, the resin printing process STL was made for.

Triangles only approximate curves, so a coarse STL shows facets on a round band. A file for printing also needs to be closed, or watertight.

What it leaves out

  • Units. The same file can mean millimetres or inches, so confirm which with the printer or caster first.
  • Parts. A ring and its stones usually arrive as one mesh and cannot be told apart.

To show or sell a piece, ask for a .3dm or .glb as well: both keep separate parts, so metal and stones can take their own materials.

Working with STL files

The free STL viewer opens an STL in your browser with real metal materials, without uploading it. The metal weight calculator infers the units from the finger hole and the stones, and lets you correct them. Jewelry CAD exports STL as a watertight casting mesh for lost-wax casting, with validity checks.

Questions

Is an STL the same as a 3DM file?

No. A .3dm from Rhino or MatrixGold keeps exact curves, units and named layers. An STL is a triangle mesh, often exported from a .3dm for printing.
