USDZ file: AR Quick Look on iPhone and iPad

A USDZ file is a 3D model packed into one file: a scene in Pixar's Universal Scene Description format and its textures, stored in an uncompressed zip archive. Apple's AR Quick Look, built into iPhone and iPad, opens it with no app to install and shows the piece in the room through the camera.

What a USDZ file holds

The file holds the geometry, materials, textures and the units the model was built in, so AR Quick Look can show a piece at its modelled size. The geometry is a mesh rather than the exact curves of a 3DM file, so a USDZ is for showing a piece, not for making it.

USDZ and GLB

A GLB does the same job in web viewers and on Android, so a product page with AR on both platforms serves both files. In Safari, a link with rel="ar" around a single image opens the USDZ in AR Quick Look:

<a rel="ar" href="/models/solitaire.usdz">
  <img src="/images/solitaire.jpg" alt="Yellow gold solitaire ring">
</a>

The 3D format comparison covers STL, OBJ and the rest.

USDZ in the studio

In the studio, Export → 3D → USDZ downloads the design for an iPhone or iPad. The export is scaled so its longest side is 3 cm, a size that reads right for a ring or a pendant, rather than the piece's own measured size. 3D model export comes with the Growth plan and above. The export guide covers the other exports.

AR Quick Look sets a piece on a surface such as a table. For a ring on the hand, virtual ring try-on follows the finger through the camera.

Questions

How do I open a USDZ file?

Tap it on an iPhone or iPad, in Safari, Messages, Mail or Files, to open AR Quick Look. A Mac previews it in 3D with Quick Look.
